Assessing Risk for Acute GVHD Steroid-Induced Hyperglycemia: What Nurses Need to Know

Oncology nurses have a crucial role in helping patients with aGVHD understand steroid-induced hyperglycemia, assessing risk factors for diabetes, and providing patient education for glucose monitoring and insulin administration.

Before starting steroids, oncology nurses can review the patient’s history of prediabetes, gestational diabetes, or diabetes and other risk factors. Watching blood glucose levels closely while the patient is receiving CNIs and steroids is essential in early intervention for steroid-induced hyperglycemia.
