Editorial Policy

Mission Statement

Cancer Nursing Today delivers critical news and information to support and advance the careers and education of oncology nurses in order to advance oncology treatments and care, support the role of the oncology nurse in the patient’s journey, and promote enhanced patient outcomes and quality of life.

Our editorial staff is knowledgeable and aims for editorial excellence. We accomplish this through honest and objective reporting of factual information with a premium placed on accuracy and ethics. Our team is comprised of experienced medical journalists who pride themselves on delivering trusted, evidence-based medical and health news in a way that both informs and entertains our audience.

We believe that aboveboard reporting is paramount. Therefore, it is incumbent on our editors to always write with impartiality at top of mind. We demonstrate respect for all ethnicities, genders, orientations, and religions without ever pushing a political or business agenda.

Relevancy is a key driver of our mission, which means staying on top of the latest stories and breakthroughs pertinent to you, the cancer nurse. Therefore, we endeavor to keep you informed and intrigued on a daily basis.

Statement of Purpose

Our purpose is to provide excellence in oncology nursing reporting. Our editorial staff does so by conducting proper research on relevant topics that matter to our audience, then reporting those topics with succinctness and accuracy.

We fully recognize nurses as close allies to physicians and pivotal figures in the medical space. With that recognition comes a promise to deliver high-quality and engrossing material that will earn the trust and readership of the oncology nursing community through consistent and ethical practices.

We abide by our editorial guidelines, which are not a legally binding set of editorial bylaws, but rather a series of ethical parameters to follow for operating with clarity, ethics, and total transparency.

Original Content Guidelines

Cancer Nursing Today publishes original articles and video content from reputable sources and key opinion leaders. Our editorial staff is required to provide correct sourcing for the articles they develop, and for all accompanying images to avoid copyright infringement; and just as importantly, as not to betray the trust of our readers.

Examples of original content posted on Cancer Nursing Today include:

Clinical articles

Our editors assess data published in peer-reviewed medical journals and scientific studies being presented at relevant medical conferences to report on the news related to oncology that concerns nurses, specifically. All data and study design parameters are scanned by our editors during the writing process to yield factual editorial pieces that are comprehensive for the viewing of health care providers.

Original content from oncology nurses in the field

We have partnered with several oncology nurse professionals who author original content related to both clinical and practical topics affecting the field. The publication offers a platform for nurses on the front lines to write content that resonates with others in the field and provides a voice for the profession and the patients they care for.

Video interviews

We record, edit, and publish original video content with key opinion leaders in the oncology nursing field, predominantly. Cancer Nursing Today retains proprietary rights over these videos unless otherwise granting permission to a third-party entity. All interviewees should be aware that Cancer Nursing Today retains the right to use this video content at our discretion, and enters into not non-binding, non-legal understanding that certain sponsored videos may take precedence in publishing expediency.

Licensed and Third-Party Content

Part of our mission to uphold the highest level of editorial integrity is to honor the rights of third-party content, defined in this context as any content that has not been developed by Cancer Nursing Today. Our editorial staff often oversees the inclusion of such third-party content, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Internet images
  • Screenshots
  • Tweets
  • Diagrams
  • Charts
  • Logos/Trademarks
  • Quotes
  • Interviews

Our policy directs that our editors provide either proper attribution for any third-party sources and/or obtain written permission from the copyright owner, excluding image retrieval from paid subscription sites (such as Getty Images) and sites that house images considered to be in the public domain (such as Google Images).

When attributing information, Cancer Nursing Today requires that our editors:

  • Disclose any conflicts of interest at the top of the story
  • Verify the validity of all the sources when using information from social media
  • Include, where possible, a source’s business, professional, and personal affiliations
  • Attribute news to reputable, third-party sources, when necessary, through direct mention, preferably, or at the very least through linking to the original source
  • Clearly state a source/opinion leader’s qualifications for speaking on the topic at hand

Corrections Policy

Cancer Nursing Today is cognizant of the fact that trust is hard to earn and easy to lose through misstatement of facts. We also realize that sometimes human error does occur. When errors are made, we encourage our readers/sponsors to reach out, so that we might rectify them expeditiously. That process is as follows:

  • The authoring editor is notified of a factual error in a story or video and will redress that error forthwith via our content management system, or, if needed, through collaboration with our digital team.
  • Once said correction is made, the editor is responsible for adding texting at the bottom of the content piece to clarify what alterations/changes have been made.
  • The article date is only changed if the story has required marked changes or undergone internal medical review.
  • The party who pinpointed the error(s) is notified of the change and provided a URL of the updated content piece.

Additionally, our editorial staff is required to never, under any circumstances, intentionally misrepresent facts or otherwise write in bad faith or exhibit clear biases. We reaffirm our stance as impartial arbiters of truth and balance in medical reporting.
