Claudia Maldonado, RN, MSN, FMP, CMSRN, and Sarah Low, RN, MSN, OCN, CMSRN, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, discuss their Best of Oral Abstracts-winning presentation, “Stepping Up: Improving Inpatient Ambulation for Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Patients,” live at ONS 2023.

Their study revealed that patients experienced a significant decrease in mobility while hospitalized, but using Fitbit trackers helped patients monitor and increase their daily step counts. The collected data indicated that accessing daily step counts led to a 137-step increase per day. By integrating technology such as activity monitors, oncology nurses can enhance symptom management and encourage patient activity, potentially improving patient recovery and quality of life.
