Chaely Medley, MSN, AGNP-C, a thoracic oncology nurse practitioner at the Novant Health Cancer Institute, discusses the importance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in November each year.
“If you have lungs, you’re at risk for getting lung cancer,” Medley said, emphasizing that smoking isn’t the only cause of lung cancer, which can occur in people who are young and have never smoked.
She explained that lung cancer “doesn’t discriminate,” which makes it critical for providers and patients to be aware of signs and symptoms.
“It’s so important that we are in tune with our bodies, and we are empowered to say, ‘I don’t feel well, something’s wrong,’ and check in with your doctor,” Medley said.
